What makes the Buenos Aires colectivo (an “Argentine invention”!) different from other means of urban and suburban public transport in the world’s great metropolises? Well, that’s exactly what this book seeks to capture: the love of drivers expressed in small ornamental details, following a tradition that begins with graphic lines, fileteado porteño, pearly steering wheels, inlays, and lights, and may even end with tiny shoes, baby booties, stars on tufted ceilings, and quilted curtains.

The Buenos Aires colectivo preserves (albeit in twisted form) the symbolic affirmations of the national spirit (including the fantasy of an “argen-yang” shield). The dandy, the nobleman, the nightlife, and fine drinks also find in this space their formal representation. The history of the colectivo can be read here in sections as hilarious as “comfort and disability,” “the discourse of double animality,” or “Xuxa and stuffed animals.”
